Mya is just another prisoner in a for-profit detention facility who profits off more than just the taxpayers. They make a tidy profit each year selling inmate snacks and toiletries through prison commissary accounts. In the interest of their investors, the jail has also contracted with a medical research company to rent their inmates out for medical studies and research! The private prison corporation is paid handsomely for allowing their inmates to participate in these experiments. The inmates are paid for their participation of course, through their commissary account. But thanks to the high markup of everything sold in the commissary, the company is actually paying these human guinea pigs nothing! Mya doesn't care though. Since going to prison, her parents have cut her off from their funds and all she eats is the daily garbage fed to all inmates.
